It was the summer of 1933. A powerful hurricane bore down on Ocean City, Maryland, causing widespread destruction and leaving a trail of battered buildings and broken dreams. All looked hopeless for the beautiful seaside community until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stepped in. They fortified a new inlet and restored Ocean City to her original (if not improved) grandeur. In one particular way, Ocean City was made even better than she was before the hurricane. And what was that way? Fishing.
Now, in a class all her own, the Ocean City inlet draws fishermen from all corners of the country and from around the world. With easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and impressive fishing opportunities for untold miles, Ocean City is quite easily considered the White Marlin Capital of the World – a fisherman’s paradise.
If you enjoy fishing – coastline, offshore, onshore, you name it – Ocean City, Maryland, has a one-way ticket with your name on it. Ever wanted to try a hand at clamming or crabbing? And true to its name, The White Marlin Open happens in Ocean City and is considered The Super Bowl of fishing tournaments. (Note: This year, nearly 5 million dollars was on the line!) There are tournaments for all ages and skills. The ladies-only tournament, for instance – Heels and Reels – draws an impressive crowd. Come learn or show others how it’s done. If you like competitive fishing, come for a visit as soon as possible! Specifically, look for tournaments to occur between the months of April and December.
4. Ocean City is known for its spectator opportunities.
What if you don’t like to fish, but you enjoy the thrill of the competition? No problem! Each afternoon and evening when tournaments take place, hundreds of spectators rally to cheer on the fishermen and show their support for the sport. Come for a glimpse of the day’s most impressive catches and take part in the nail-biting, public fish weigh-ins. Listen to the smack talk or participate in the cheering. Being a spectator is free and exciting. Enjoy the crackling spirit of competition!
5. Ocean City is famous for fish fries.
It would stand to reason that a community known for its fishing opportunities would also know how to prepare and serve its fish. And Ocean City sure knows how to cook fish! Here is a simple recipe prepared by fishermen who fish in Ocean City.
2 lbs of filleted and cubed fish (any fish will do!)
1 cup of whole milk
1 1/4 cup of flour
2 tbsp of confectioner’s sugar
1/2 tsp of paprika
1 tsp of garlic powder
1 tsp of salt
2 tsp of black pepper
2 qt of coconut oil (substitute with peanut oil if desired)
1. Cut the filleted fish into 1-inch nuggets. Set aside.
2. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, paprika, garlic, salt, and pepper) in a bowl.
3. Dip the nuggets in the milk and then roll the nuggets in the dry mix and set aside.
4. Fry nuggets in a deep fryer with coconut oil for 3 to 5 minutes.
5. Serve nuggets with cocktail sauce or a lemon, if preferred.
So regardless of what you like to fish, it’s time to rig up the boat, sharpen the hooks and prepare the freshest bait. Ocean City awaits you and your biggest fishing expeditions.
