There’s a chill in the air. The leaves have started to show their fall colors. And everyone is ready for all the season has to offer.
It’s time to locate your favorite pumpkin pie recipe and to visit a pick-your-own farm to store up some of the season’s bounty. Apples, figs and fall raspberries are in season now, ready for fresh eating and fall canning. Other autumnal fun includes ghost walks, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, haunted houses and zombie paintball!
Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes
Most pumpkin patches and corn mazes open by mid-September. Whether you are just out and about enjoying the crisp fall air or if you are looking for the ideal pumpkin to make your jack-o-lantern, you’re sure to find what you are looking for at one of the area’s pumpkin patches.
There are a couple large pumpkin patches in the area. The first is at Adkins Farm Market, just 24 miles from Berlin to Salisbury at 31493 Mt. Hermon Road. Once there, you’ll enjoy a seven-acre corn maze (open through October 31st), a pick-in-the-field pumpkin patch (some have already been gathered if you choose not to go into the field), a child-sized hay bale maze, a large selection of mums and much more.
The second is at Wright’s Market, just 35 miles from Berlin in Mardela Springs at 9300 Old Railroad Road. They have lots of pumpkins and gourds, plus sweet potato and pumpkin ice cream. Enjoy October Fest every Saturday and Sunday in October with hayrides, straw pit, corn pit, petting zoo, corn maze, tricycle track, train rides, bounce house and more, plus lots of Halloween fun on October 31st.
Here are a few interesting facts about pumpkins:
- Pumpkins are 90 percent water.
- They take 85-125 days to mature.
- The largest pumpkin ever grown weighed in at 1,140 pounds!

Haunted Berlin Ghost Walk
Some say that parts of Berlin are haunted, especially the Atlantic Hotel where lights randomly turn off and on, objects move around, doors close and lock at will and a little girl rides her tricycle in the halls and interacts with guests in one of the rooms.
The Haunted Berlin Ghost Walk is a 1.5-mile stroll through historic Berlin where you can visit some of the other haunted sites including the Old Fish Shop, the former Odd Fellows Hall, the Pitts House, the Maryland Wine Bar, the Story of Crazy Characters and St. Paul’s Graveyard.
Berlin Oktoberfest & Fall Sidewalk Sale
On Saturday, October 14th, from noon until 5 p.m. the Berlin Oktoberfest and Fall Sidewalk Sale takes place in downtown Berlin. Join the fun with music, food, a sidewalk sale, Beer garden, games and activities for children and a Cornhole tournament.
Ocean City Screams Haunted House
Visit the winning haunted house of the 2014 Haunted House Design and Build Competition, Ocean City Screams Haunted House. Dubbed the “scariest haunted house in Maryland,” it is one of two built in Maryland (by Steelhead Events and Productions) which are both described as scary, horrifying and intense, and ranked among the best Things to Do in Maryland. Plan to be terrified as you scream your way through the beach’s biggest, scariest, most intense, state-of-the-art haunted house. Not recommended for children under the age of thirteen.
Field of Screams
Open on Fridays and Saturdays, plus some Thursdays and Sundays, between September 22 through November 4, 2017, the Field of Screams packs a lot into one space with a haunted house, two haunted trails and a haunted hayride. Even if you have been to the site before, the designers have reworked the trails and hayride to keep the surprise and scare factor intact even for repeat visitors.
